National 5 Psychology: Course Overview

National 5 Psychology introduces learners to the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. The course helps pupils understand why people think, feel and behave in different ways while developing research, analytical and communication skills.

Learners explore psychological theories and research methods and apply their understanding to real-life situations and behaviours.

Course Content

Research

• Understanding psychological research methods and ethics

• Planning and evaluating investigations

• Interpreting data and basic statistics

Individual Behaviour

• Exploring explanations for individual behaviour

• Studying topics such as sleep and dreams, personality or phobias

• Understanding psychological theories and evidence

Social Behaviour

• Investigating how people behave in social situations

• Exploring conformity, obedience and social influence

• Applying psychological explanations to everyday behaviour

NPA Psychology (SCQF Levels 5 & 6): Course Overview

The National Progression Award (NPA) in Psychology gives learners the opportunity to explore psychology through practical, research-based learning without the pressure of a final examination. The course develops understanding of human behaviour and introduces learners to key psychological concepts, theories and research skills.

The NPA is ideal for learners interested in psychology, social sciences, healthcare, education or careers involving people and communication.

Course Content

Learners study three mandatory units:

Psychology: Research

• Planning and carrying out investigations

• Interpreting and evaluating findings

• Exploring ethical considerations in research

Psychology: Individual Behaviour

• Investigating how psychology explains individual behaviour

• Exploring psychological theories and concepts

Psychology: Social Behaviour

• Understanding how people interact within social environments

• Exploring social influence and group behaviour

• Analysing the impact of society on behaviour and thinking
