History at Portlethen Academy gives pupils the chance to build their skills step by step as they move through school. In S1–S3, they learn how to investigate the past, use evidence, and tell the story of real people and events. These skills help prepare them for National 4, National 5, and Higher History, where they explore Scotland’s past and major world events in greater depth. Studying History also builds confidence, curiosity, and communication skills that are valuable in many different careers — from law, journalism, and teaching to heritage, politics, and social research. Most importantly, it helps young people understand the world around them and how the past continues to shape the future.
There is support study sessions on a Thursday afterschool for any pupil who might want some help with homework or support with their studying for assessments.
CURRICULUM MAP FOR S1, S2 & S3
In the Broad General Education (S1–S3), pupils are given time in class to complete their Key Tasks. If a Key Task is not finished during the lesson, it will be issued as homework. In addition, pupils will receive one formal piece of homework per term per subject.
For senior phase classes (S4–S6), homework is more frequent and focused on independent study. Pupils are expected to regularly consolidate their classwork, revise key content and prepare for upcoming class tests. Assessment dates will be shared with pupils in advance so they can plan their study time effectively.
