“Rights Respecting Schools” refers to the promotion and embedment of United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child (UNCRC). At Portlethen Academy, the Rights of our young people are at the core of our school ethos, policies, and practice. In school, pupils and staff are driving UNCRC policies to promote fairness and equality and encourage student well-being. This continuation of adopting a child-centred approach facilitates our work to become a Silver Awarded “Rights Respecting School”. Currently, the group are analysing pupil voice surveys to gain insight into student perspectives, and act upon feedback given by pupils to introduce new school systems, such as “Right of the Week.”
We are committed at Portlethen Academy, to upholding the rights of the child, as per the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This involves regular staff training, discussion, lesson content, assemblies and signposting to information about the UNCRC.
Miss Hill and Miss Ferguson are currently leading a group of pupils from across the school, in analysing our data, in order to write our new Action Plan, as we register our Bronze status and go for Silver over the next two school sessions.
We recently conducted the Rights Respecting Schools Award surveys in school, to take a temperature check of how our school community feels about all things Children’s Rights. We will analyse this data and use it to inform our action plan, ready for submitting this school session. We will then work together as a school community to work on our action plan over the next 18 months to hopefully achieve Silver Status.
