Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS)
Teaching Staff: Mr Cunningham; Miss Povilonyte
What is RMPS?
RMPS at Portlethen Academy covers a wide range of topics which develop our pupils’ higher order thinking skills. RMPS is the study of a diverse range of religious and non-religious beliefs and how they respond to certain moral and philosophical issues.
What do we study in RMPS?
RMPS is delivered twice a week in S1-S2 and once a week in S3. In S4 Core RMPS pupils study a Level 5 Social Anthropology unit once a week.
In S2, pupils have the opportunity to complete the Religion, Belief & Values Award National Progression Award (Level 3) which, upon successful completion, will earn them 12 SCQF points (equivalent of half of a National 5) which will appear on their exam certificates at the end S4.
In S3, all pupils will study a National 4 RMPS unit as well as a Level 4 Religion, Belief & Values Award National Progression Award. This will also appear on their exam certificates at the end of S4.
In the senior phase (S4-S6), pupils have the opportunity to study RMPS at National 5 and Higher levels.

In the Broad General Education (S1–S3), pupils are given time in class to complete their Key Tasks. If a Key Task is not finished during the lesson, it will be issued as homework. In addition, pupils will receive one formal piece of homework per term per subject.
For senior phase classes (S4–S6), homework is more frequent and focused on independent study. Pupils are expected to regularly consolidate their classwork, revise key content and prepare for upcoming class tests. Assessment dates will be shared with pupils in advance so they can plan their study time effectively.
Taking part in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) gives pupils the chance to develop a wide range of important skills for life and work. Through researching local charities, preparing presentations, and working as a team, pupils build their communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. They also develop empathy and a stronger understanding of social issues in their community. Presenting to others helps build confidence and public-speaking ability, while managing deadlines and dividing roles encourages organisation and responsibility. Overall, YPI supports pupils in becoming active, responsible citizens who can make a positive difference in society.
