CURRICULUM MAP FOR S1, S2 & S3
Broad & General Education Courses (S1-S3)
S1 and S2 Home Economics
First and Second year students will attend HE as part of a rotation with PBL. Each class will have 8 weeks in HE and will cover numerous topics such and food and nutrition, hygiene and cooking skills.
S3 Health and Food
Pupils studying the Home Economics course in S3 have 3 periods each week. The course equips pupils with a wide range of knowledge and skills for progression onto both the courses available during the senior phase.
The topics studied during S3 include:
Food & Health, Food Technology, Food & Nutrition, Food Choices and Food Safety
The practical cookery lessons complement the theory work being studied and also give pupils more independence and greater choice.
Health and Food Technology (HFT)
This course is suitable for students who have an interest in developing skills, knowledge and understanding about the relationships between food, nutrition, diet and health, and contemporary food issues that affect consumer food choices.
National 4 and 5
The Health & Food Technology course is made up of 3 Units of work.
The units studied are; Food For Health, Food Product Development and Contemporary food Issues. At National 5 pupils must also complete an assignment and National 4 pupils an added value unit.
Higher
The Higher course is assessed externally by the SQA and is made up of an assignment and a 2 hour question paper. The assignment gives students an opportunity to demonstrate a range of skills including investigative and research skills and organizational and management skills.
Practical Cookery
This Course aims to further develop learners’ life skills and enhance their personal effectiveness in terms of cookery and to provide a set of skills for those who wish to progress to further study in the hospitality context.
In preparing learners for life, the Course anticipates their future needs in that it enables them to learn how to plan, prepare and cook food for themselves and others. It also develops organisational skills, which have an application in a wide variety of contexts.
National 4
National 4 contains written units, practical cooking (a 2 course meal) and an added value unit (a second 2 course meal) that must be passed in order to pass the course.
National 5
National 5 contains a written exam, an assignment as well as an internally marked practical cooking assessment (a 3 course meal) in order to pass.

Supported study sessions are offered by teachers throughout the academic year. Sessions take part over lunch or after school, and each teacher offers a different day to ensure all students are able to attend.

Home Economics teaches a wide range of skills from practical cooking school to help you cook independently, to nutritional information to help you/others make the most informed food choices for health.
Subjects like National 5 Practical Cookery and Practical Cake Craft allow you to gain experience perfect for a career in hospitality, events or catering. Pathways may include; Hospitality Management courses at University, Professional Cookery Training at colleges or Foundation Apprenticeships & Modern Apprenticeships in Hospitality.
National 5/Higher/Adv Higher Health & Food Technology gives learners the experiences and skills required to pursue a career in nutrition, dietetics, food science, marketing and food engineering. Courses like Food and Nutrition, Nutrition, Food Science, Dietetics and Home Economics Teaching are all courses available at University who would recognise Health & Food Technology as a key subject.
