Practical Technologies (S3)
This S3 course offers pupils a hands-on introduction to practical manufacturing skills using wood and metal. It is suited to learners who enjoy working with tools, following clear instructions, and producing high-quality finished products.
Course Content
Use a range of hand and machine tools safely and correctly.
Learn how to measure, mark out, cut, shape, and join materials.
Follow technical drawings and workshop procedures to complete projects.

Successful completion of this course prepares pupils for National 4 or National 5 Practical Woodworking or Practical Metalworking in the senior phase (see drop-down menus below). It also supports future vocational learning or apprenticeships in construction, engineering, and related fields.
National 5 Practical Metalworking introduces you to the skills and techniques needed to work with metal. You’ll learn how to measure & mark out, cut & shape, assemble and prepare metal for a finish using hand tools and machines. The course covers basic metalworking processes like forming, welding, brazing, and machining, while focusing on safety in the workshop. It’s perfect for those interested in metalworking, engineering, or pursuing a career in trades like welding, fabrication, or construction, as well as those looking to progress to mechanical engineering.
